We are an owner-managed family of companies based in Hamburg, with satisfied customers in over 80 countries worldwide. Our work focuses on future-oriented solutions for dentistry and dental technology, from innovative caries treatment without drilling through to state-of-the-art 3D printing. We have been passionate about research and development to the highest quality standards for over six decades.

But our expertise doesn’t just benefit dentists, dental technicians and patients. KTR Kunststofftechnik Hans Rethwisch GmbH,
for example, which is part of Mühlbauer Technology, uses injection moulding to produce technical precision parts for numerous industries, from aviation through to plant engineering. And BURMS - 3D Druck Jena GmbH & Co. KG offers innovative 3D printing solutions for diverse areas of application, covering everything from medicine and equipment manufacturing to motorsport.

Story

It all began with a vision

Mühlbauer Technology’s story is closely tied to DMG Dental-Material Gesellschaft. This company was founded in Hamburg in 1963 by business graduate Ernst Mühlbauer and is the oldest of today’s family of companies. Start-up capital was modest, but the first goal was firmly in sight, namely to produce the best silicate cements on the market. Even back then, quality and pioneering spirit formed the company’s foundations. Innovative new DMG developments soon revolutionised dentistry, the company grew and other companies came on board. 2005 saw the founding of Mühlbauer Technology to bring together acquisitions, shareholdings, start-ups and DMG subsidiaries in a family holding company. KTR Kunststofftechnik, the US company Sterngold and DMG Digital Enterprises, for example, have all gradually become members of our family of companies. BURMS - 3D Druck Jena GmbH & Co KG has also recently become part of our portfolio.

A family mindset and passion for innovation

What was once Ernst Mühlbauer’s one-man business has now become an internationally active group of companies with responsibility for around 700 employees. But some things remain unchanged:
Commitment to quality. A future-oriented approach.
And the sense of family.
Today, Mühlbauer Technology is headed by Dr Wolfgang Mühlbauer, the son of our founder. He was born on the same day his father founded DMG, so he has a special bond with the company. And Dr Mühlbauer’s children mark the third generation ready to take on responsibility.

Sustainable practices

Sustainability plays a fundamental role in the way we work.
This is reflected in our resource-saving measures, including green roofs, photovoltaic systems, reduced packaging and the use of green electricity at our production sites. It can also be seen in how we subsidise the Deutschland Ticket travel card and the bike leasing scheme JobRad for our employees.

But we also see sustainability in terms of having long-term corporate and employee policies. Many of our employees have been with the company for a very long time. The owner family’s third generation has started taking on management roles within the group. Business decisions aren’t made on the basis of achieving short-term profits. As a group, Mühlbauer Technology is not dependent on external investors.

Our vision is to establish sustainability as a natural driver in the actions of Mühlbauer Technology and its employees.

Family Entrepreneur of the Year

Dr Wolfgang Mühlbauer was awarded the Hamburg Metropolitan Region’s ‘Family Entrepreneur of the Year 2022’ for his work at DMG.
In his congratulatory speech, Michael Westhagemann, Hamburg’s then Senator for Economic Affairs and Innovation, praised the entrepreneurial commitment to Hamburg as a business location.
In particular, he emphasised the successful retention of employees, high level of innovation, social commitment and dedication to a sustainable corporate policy.
